Affection is a gameplay element in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature.
Affection measures the friendship level with villagers and marriage candidates. Raising affection levels are required for certain events, to obtain recipes and to marry any potential female marriage candidates. Harvest Sprites also have affection levels, but they differ from regular villagers. There is also a separate affection level for animals on your farm. Because animals cannot be given gifts, there are actions that the player can take to increase the affection of animals.[1]
Villagers[]
All regular villagers (and your child) start out with a base of 50 affection points and can have a maximum of 255 affection points.[2] If you've spoken to a character or given them a gift, their affection will raise by one point the following day.[3] Some villagers will change their dialogue at around 200 affection or so (when they consider the player a close friend).

Harvest Sprites[]
The Harvest Sprites have different types of affection levels. They have a hidden affection level that increases every 25 affection points.[9] Each time that you ask them to work for you, they lose 2 affection points.[10] The gift values described in the tables above for villagers apply to the Harvest Sprites' affection as well.
Additionally, the Sprites have a hidden skill level for work. Each sprite starts out with no skill at each job that you can hire them for. Each time you hire them for work, their skill level will increase by one. This skill level maxes out at 255.[11]
