The protagonist's child will be born before the second chapter of Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life.
In addition to inborn characteristics, children's interests change depending on the daily actions of the protagonist. Ultimately, the child's career path is determined according to how the "specialty" develops at the end of the Twilight Chapter.
The child's gender will be determined at the end of Chapter 1 during the wedding ceremony cinematic at the forest pond, three options will appear: "It'd be nice to have a boy," "It'd be nice to have a girl," or "I'd be happy with a boy or girl!" Selecting the 3rd option will randomize the child's gender to be a boy or a girl.
Story[]
The protagonist has their child in the second chapter with their spouse. During the second chapter, "Branching," they are toddlers and mainly wander around the farm. The protagonist can carry their child, show them items (but not give them) and speak to them. Depending on their other parent and the way the protagonist treats them, the child will develop specific interests and abilities.
During the third chapter, "Blessings," they are now a young child and have their own room. Their decorations depend on their likes and abilities, they can still be influenced at this stage, but it is recommended to start at chapter 2.
During the fourth chapter, "Blooming," they are now a teenager and the protagonist and their spouse now have their own room. Their decorations depend on their likes and abilities, they will be more rebellious and harder to sway (rebelliousness depending on their parent.)
Personality[]
As the child ages their personality will also change as well. Depending on who the player marries will affect the child's starting personality, however, the child will be influenced by how the player interacts with them, or lack of interaction, during chapter 2, Chapter 3, and Chapter 4. This is not to be confused with their interests or career ability and cannot be checked by any menu. Interaction with your child, or lack of interaction, is most important to shaping your child's personality in the earlier chapters and becomes harder to influence as the chapters continue. If the player interacts with their child often, show the child items, and gives the child gifts then the child is more likely to be friendly to the player, happy, and sociable. If the player does not interact with their child then the child is more likely to develop mood swings, be depressed, and not as friendly to the player.
Starting Personalities Based on Marriage Partner[]

Outgoing and Naughty - Rock, Molly
Gifts[]
During their first year, the protagonist's child will not accept gifts. They may react to certain items, which usually affect their Likes and Abilities. The child's preferred gifts are based on their other parent.
During their second year, they will accept gifts depending on their parent and what you've shown them.
During their third year,

Child's Interests[]

The protagonist can hold their child.
The child's likes and abilities are shaped by various actions, and there is a lot of confusion online about how exactly to influence these. The best way to check if you are successfully influencing your child is to check their character page in the menu right when they wake up in the morning. This is when the experiences of the previous day will be added up into the counter, shown as little yellow ticks added to the green bar. If you don't see any yellow, then the child learned nothing the previous day. They can only gain at most 2 points in Interest and Ability for every category per day for a maximum of 1000 points. The only exceptions are the Treasure Box/Big Branch event and the Starlight Concert Festival.
The child's interests will determine which places they tend to visit and what autonomous activities they do, which will increase their abilities further. This is why it is important to raise their interests early on, because they will become more and more independent and harder to influence as they get older. At the end of each chapter they will also get a significant boost to their Ability score based on a percentage of their Interest that will be added at the start of the next chapter on top of their innate partner-based gain.
Children act every day, and through various experiences, their abilities in the six fields of "Ranching", "Farming", "Athletics", "Music", "Art", and "Academics" rise. These fields can be confirmed by "What you like" and "What you are good at" in the resident information on the menu, and there are the following differences.[1][2]
Chapter 2 is the only time when you can force your child to be at a specific location. This can be important if you are having trouble influencing your child through other means. For example, if you wanted to raise your child's interest in Art, your best bet is to hold them hostage inside Gordy's trailer or Romana's Villa for the entire day. You won't get much farm work done, but your child will be the next Picasso.
Chapter 3 offers the highest boosts as this is when your child will start accepting gifts and is when you get access to items like the Odd Sheet Music. Be warned however that some kids just do not care about some of these items. Nami's daughter, for example, is unimpressed by Sully's Medal or Flora's Necklace and these items will do nothing.
Starting on Chapter 4, showing your child items has a much lesser effect, if any at all. But if you managed to raise their interests enough by this point, then it will continue to snowball on it's own as they grow and become more independent. The special items like the Firework and Tomtom Drum will continue to have an effect all the way into the later chapters, although they are most effective during the third.
Room[]
During chapter 2, the child will have their own room with individual possessions based on their interests. In chapter 3, the house is further expanded and a children's room is added. The bookshelf in this child's room changes the contents of the books depending on the child's interests. The details of the conditions are as shown in the table below, and the corresponding books in the table on the right will be lined up on the bookshelf. The first book is most likely to be chosen from the area of ``what you like most, the second book is also from the area of ``what you like, and the third book is most likely to be selected from the area of ``what you are good at, depending on which area the child is paying attention to. This will serve as a guideline. In the following chapters, they will be placed according to the conditions, so be sure to check the bookshelf frequently.

Child Influences[]
There are six career paths available to the child: Rancher (animal care), Farmer (crops), Athlete, Artist, Musician and Scholar. If the child becomes a Rancher or Farmer they will inherit the farm at the end of Chapter 6. If the child becomes a Scholar, Artist, Musician, or Athlete then the child will leave Forgotten Valley at the end of Chapter 6, leaving the player's wife/husband and Takakura to tend to the farm. Depending on who the player marries in Chapter 1 determines which three areas out of six your child already shows interest in. For instance, Lumina's child will be more interested in Music, Art, and Science (Scholar) at the start of Chapter 2.
During the Starry Night Festival in Winter the player will be able to make a "wish" that will greatly influence what interests your child will have for their future career. The personality of the player's child when the child is grown up depends on which bachelor or bachelorette the player married in Chapter 1.
Starting Influences[]
- Cecelia's Child and Matthew's Child will have both a starting interest and ability for farming. Their second starting statistic will be in in ranching, followed by academics.[2]
- Molly's Child and Rock's Child will have both a starting interest and ability for athletics. Their second starting statistic will be in in ranching, followed by music.[2]
- Gustafa's Child will have both a starting interest and ability for music. Their second starting statistic will be in academics, followed by farming.[2]
- Lumina's Child will have both a starting interest and ability for music. Their second starting statistic will be in art, followed by academics.[2]
- Gordy's Child will have both a starting interest and ability for art. Their second starting statistic will be in in academics, followed by athletics.[2]
- Nami's Child will have both a starting interest and ability for art. Their second starting statistic will be in in academics, followed by farming.[2]
Events[]
Blessing[]
Treasure Box[]
The protagonist's child brought a box back to their room that they found on the beach. They think it contains a map and protests to any suggestion that it's empty, to open it, or to throw it away. They refuse to open it and go to the bathroom, possibly to study the map on the wall, boosting their interest in academics. This event is triggered if the player enters the child's room at anytime during chapter 3 while the child is in their room. If the Treasure Box event occurs then the Big Branch event will not occur, the Treasure Box event will be more likely to happen if your child has the reserved and calm personality (e.g. the child of Nami, Gustafa, or Lumina).[3]
Big Branch[]
The protagonist's child brought back a stick they found into their room. They think that it is a magic stick that will turn them into a wizard. They will ask the player a series of questions, if the player picks the correct choices then the child will gain a boost in their interest in art. Picking the wrong choice will lose some friendship points with the child, same as the Treasure Box event, but will also not gain any points of interest in art. This event is triggered if the player enters the child's room at anytime during chapter 3 while the child is in their room. If the Big Branch event occurs then the Treasure Box event will not occur, the Big Branch event will be more likely to happen if your child has the outgoing and naughty personality (e.g. the child of Rock/Molly).[3]
Requests[]
Your child will not post any requests on the request board.
Trivia[]
- In the original Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life game the child would always be male until the PS2 remake, where the player had the ability to change the gender to female by interacting with a pot inside the harvest sprite tree 100 times (despite the look of the daughter will always the same regardless of which female to be wooed). Doing so in this game will instead reward the player with a music disc.
