Fishing is an activity in Harvest Moon 3DS: A New Beginning.
In A New Beginning, the player is able to catch fish either by using the traditional fishing pole or by the use of traps.
Fish Trapping
In order to use fish traps, you must learn how to use them and get supplies from Dunhill. On Spring 20, walk from the village area to the river area with at least one empty slot in your rucksack in order to get the tutorial.[1]
There are four different fishing spots available where you can put down your traps. Three of them are in various spots around the river area (#1 is by the bridge leading to the village, #2 is between the two bridges in the area and #3 is north of the rocks leading to the sprite's tree stumps), and the fourth is at the beach at Southern Island.[2] Put the traps into the fishing spot and wait for the traps to collect something. With traps, you are able to have up to five of whatever it is that you've caught at one time.
Traps will eventually break over a period of time. You can make more fish traps (each requiring 5 lumber) using the blueprints or by buying them from Kosaburo once he moves into town.[3]

Using a Fishing Pole
Dunhill will give the player their first fishing rod in Summer of your first year. Walk to the river area on the 2nd day of Summer or later to trigger the event.[5] There is also an upgraded version of the standard rod called the Master Rod. In order to make this fishing rod, you must first get the blueprints for it by befriending Kosaburo. If you need another fishing rod or fishing bait, these can also be purchased from Kosaburo.[6]
Unlike critters, fish are not affected by season and are always available to catch all year round.[7]
