There are three types of fish you can catch in HM: BTN, and each sells for a different price.
To get the fishing rod, visit the beach between 7:00 to 10:00 am or 7:00 to 10:00 pm on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. You will find Greg at the end of the pier, and if you talk to him you'll get a fishing rod. Also, if you have 50 fish in your pond, you will get the fishing rod which will make it easier to catch normal fish and the King Fish. Once you have at least 50 fish, Greg will come to your farm to admire your pond, then he'll give you the fishing pole. Note: Have a free slot in your inventory and don't go into any buildings before talking to Greg or you will never get the fishing pole.
Aside from the three types of fish you can catch, there is also a chance of getting some kind of garbage which is worthless. Here are the selling prices for the different kinds of fish:
