  • If Ranch Story content is to be used, please either fully source/reference, or obtain written consent prior to using here on the Harvest Moon wikia.

Especially on quote pages. Do they need to be sourced? How can I make them fully source? The quotes belonged to Luna (AP)/Quotes are from the old RanchStory website via Wayback Machine, not the new miraheze one.

    • This is what I've put in:

      • Ranch Story - We have had repeated issues of content poaching and plagiarism from RanchStory. As a result, several users have asked us not to use any information from their site, including photos and text. This includes the previous domain/website that Ranch Story used to be at before hosting on their current site. Stolen photographs and other content have been removed upon request. Some photo content has been granted permission to be used here on the wikia, with references/sourcing giving credit. The Crediting RanchStory Wiki page has some good information about good practices about referencing/sourcing. If Ranch Story content is to be used, please obtain written consent prior to using here on the Harvest Moon wikia. Even with written consent, proper referencing and sourcing would be necessary.

This sounds good to me, Nixerix. Thanks for addressing this request.

  • Hello, I think "Chelsea (SI)/Quotes" should be marked for deletion. It has been way too long since her quote page was created, but the page is still empty. I asked if you could delete it.

      Loading editor
    • I could, but it would eventually be re-created. The only reason I havent added any quotes is because I played as Chelsea, so Mark moved in on my game. But I'm planning on playing as Mark soon. I could delete it for now though.

  • Hi there! I'm back again to report (I'm editor Catte on Ranchstory Wiki :) ) That user Sp00kygrrl is lifting the entire contents of our pages from our SOSFOMT sections including the content that I made specifically for our wiki - (stuff that isn't translated in the game and that I translated myself!) And I would very kindly ask you to REMOVE this content and take action against the user plagiarising our content!

    • Good morning,

To clarify, my own scans, which I compared side-by-side for each of the ones hosted on this wiki, I confirmed were my own and decided it would be alright if they stayed. On those scans, a lot of the damage is done as far as proper sourcing goes. They can be found all over a variety of websites with no attribution, so I felt no need to press the matter. Those scans were my content, so I had all the right to decide how it should be used. The images of Brandon, particularly the transparent portraits, were made by hand from screenshots our users had taken of the game using the Switch's screenshot function and the translation of the villager card is wholey provided by Catte right down to the font selection. They are not my content, therefore I will issue no statement on that matter.

As to why I made no reply at the time, I had taken some umbrage at the "I have heard similar complaints for your website and others as well, I'm sure" statement and felt less confident in my time bringing the matters that have been bothering RS's editors to your attention being of any use. The main instigating event was by a user named Mai is Me who had copied word for word our Festival page up until the point that a script protected the page's contents. A break at that point made it exceptionally difficult to hold any doubts about what was happening, nevermind that "Mochi-Pounding Festival" is not actually the in-game name of the first festival, and our wiki's editors were starting to get irate about the issue (among others) so I issued a statement on their behalf. While my message here and now may come off as overly negative, I genuinely appreciated that you began taking more care in making sure information is appropiately cited, sourced, and not blatantly copied after my initial message. In taking effort to take the issue seriously, I am extremely grateful.

However, proper credit is not always provided by simply linking back to the original source, and it is most certainly not walked around by simply taking a thesaurus to someone else's work, as I can plainly see on the translated annotations of Marie's screenshots on your wikia. The appropriate way to do such a thing would be to ask permission before acting, cite/credit your source where requested, and never simply copy someone else's work. A simple rule of thumb is if you feel like it would count as plagiarism on a college or high school writing assignment, just don't do it. This of course does not apply to in-game information, or official promotional material released by Marvelous. For example: When Brandon's portraits are extracted from the game itself then those would be practically expected for any wiki to make use of. The issue is solely with formatting, wording, commentary, original screenshots or video, and other original content that is being built around the content of the series that we share a common love for.

I hope this clears up the concerns of RanchStory's editors. Again, I'm grateful for the work you've done as admin of this wikia in addressing this issue so far.

      Thank you.

    • Hi Batfax,

Thank you for taking the time to reply and to add some clarification. I certainly didn't mean offense when I pointed out that I've had RanchStory users come to me with the same issue over and over again. I didn't mean it in a, 'you are all bothering me with the same issue,' sort of way. I hope it didn't feel this way. It's disheartening, frankly. I wish it didn't keep happening. I feel the same way when people blatently mirror my videos on Youtube and upload them for themselves and take credit. Even if they were to upload the video and give me credit for it, it's not the same thing because they didn't ask for permission.

All I can do is continue to remove anything that I know is plagarized and try to educate myself and others. I'm sorry that your community have had to police content. Thank you for allowing us to use the scans. I know that we still have a long way to go, and that yes, citing or linking isn't always perfect. I hope that we can continue to evolve and provide a better standard of gathering and sharing information responsibly.

  • The Character pictures FoMT and DS are swapped, especially marriage candidates. If you don't know, look at the file name.

      Loading editor
    • Well, that's hard to say. For Ann, both file names have FoMT in the file name for a FoMT/DS image. The same goes for Gray. For characters like Muffy who don't appear in FoMT at all, there would be no swapped image. For Mary, the image used in FoMT is labelled as being from Back to Nature. Her Back to Nature photo is also labelled as being Back to Nature, and her DS photo is labelled as FoMT.

Even if the image might be named incorrectly, I can always rename them. Lots of images are re-uploaded/duplicates, and have been uploaded at different times.

Images have been used in appearances to most carefully match the art style of other characters. For example, we would want to use the photo of Mary we have now becuase it more accurately matches the artwork for Lumina or Celia, who do not appear in FoMT.

Even though the image for Mary is labelled as FoMT, it makes more sense to have it under her DS portrait to match AWL character's character image for DS. As opposed to this:

Using Popuri's named 'DS' image and swapping Karen's FoMT photo with the DS photo would result in mixed artwork like this for the DS characters. Their current portraits match up better with the examples shown for Kira and Muffy.

I hope I've explained this clearly enough. It's sort of hard to explain. But for now, we can leave the images as is. I can always work on re-naming files.. but the images all look to be consistent where they currently are for each appearance.

    • Ok, let's look on these pages on another wikia, shall we?

I don't think if they are similar example, but the image of those Characters are used on both their anime (the former written in their full names) and game pages <the latter written with (NSI); like Mary (DS)>. I wanted to replace them with a better style/graphic, but i can't download SAI or any drawing software like that (and yes... they are drawn by me). I'm using MacBook Air.

    • I saw this thread and checked on Bokumonu (which is where I get 90% of the images I upload, as it's Harvest Moon's official website) and she does appear to be correct.

https://www.bokumono.com/sp/mineral.php here's the page for FoMT, you can scroll down and see the bachelorettes using models we have labled from DS.

While much less apperant, I did find this artwork of all the characters that appears to use models labeled as FoMT on the DS page. https://www.bokumono.com/series/corosute/point.html

        Loading editor
    • This is where it gets confusing, yes. If you follow the link you provided for the official page (Friends of Mineral Town)......

From there, you can then you click on 'official website' it takes you to this site: Harvest Moon Series. If you click on the characters to learn more about them, they take you to images of the FoMT characters using the style of artwork we have now for the characters on FoMT. And yes, clicking on this link that you provided (Harvest Moon DS/Cute) is supposed to be the official DS page according to the main directory. It too showcases the same images used in FoMT, as you've pointed out. The DS: Cute version also showcases the same artwork (DS Cute). If you click on the official link for More Friends of Mineral Town, (More Friends of Mineral Town)... it too showcases the FoMT images for both bachelors and bachelorettes that we are currently using for those pages.

While the following images are shown on the website, I really can't find any other reference to them anywhere else and even the official site seems to contradict itself when you click on further links to investigate:

Honestly, it's very hard to say. You see the same inconsistances in Fogu's site. Even though the site may not be "official," I think that Cherubae has worked/does work for Natsume (as she does have exclusive access to games early for the site, etc) and does a TON of social media work for them. Don't quote me on this. But anyways...... She uses the same sprites for the Back to Nature, Harvest Moon 64 and FoMT bachelorettes. Is this an official image? Is it a matter of personal preference? The DS images on her website for marriage candidates are what we have here for the FoMT characters.

I can't find many other sources for more comparison. A lot of websites for Harvest Moon information are fan made, including this one. Natsume's official website doesn't seem to have any information about games that are older, and only seem to list their newer games. Marvelous doesn't seem to have an official website at all. XSeed would only list Story of Seasons titles. Wikipedia is useless. I even cracked open my game cases for DS/DS Cute and tried to look to see if any predominant images/style jumps out, but they're mostly screenshots.. and the few character photos are all inconsistent as well.

If we want to call a vote on what would be correct, or if we should change it, I'm all ears to suggestions and can rename most files. I don't mind re-naming once we settle on what we want, but it's a lot of work to do many images.... so we need to pick something and stick with it if we do decide to do that. But really, we should just do whatever we think would be easiest to follow/is most logical for the wikia.

I don't think that anybody here is wrong. It can be hard to find anything official and concrete when the Harvest Moon universe is largely fan-made and duplicated photos are everywhere, including Giant Bomb, tvtrops, tumblr (etc), often with conflicting information.

My vote would be to leave the images on the pages that they are, but I can re-name them so they better reflect that. But my word isn't law just because I'm admin.. so feel free to add more to this thread. ^_^

Since that concern was brought up (I saw your reply and it reminded me) I should also probably point out this user who commented on Vaughn's talk page, pointing out all tbe SI events are copy/pasted from Fogu down to the color coded words.

      Loading editor
    • Yep. LOTS of content is copy/pasted from fogu. Unfortunately, this happens all the time. :( I recently removed information from the pet pages like the cat, dog and pig from fogu. I haven't removed the information for Vaughn's page because I've had every intention to replace it (since I'm playing ithe game right now), but just haven't gotten around to it. The same issue can be seen on Mark's page.

I'll remove it now and just leave the section empty. I can always fix it later.

    • It's called vandalism.

        Loading editor
    • Vandalism is not what I was reffering to at all and this wiki really hasn't seen much vandalism anyways. Poaching was the proper term. I'm referring to content copy/pasted from elsewhere or images uncredited without permission.

Poach - take or acquire in an unfair or clandestine way.

        Loading editor
    • It's called plagerism. When you steal work that isn't yours and copy/paste. A form of vandalism though, yes. We all recall our school days where we had to give credit for papers of where we got our sources from and put it into our own words. This is no different.

  • Howdy,

Nice talking to y'all directly for the first time. So, for a long time now, since about 2010, our community RanchStory has put a lot of effort into compiling information on Bokumono games into our very own wiki. We had a rocky time, lost our hosting, and had to move and rebuild at a new one. All in all, it's been a heckuva time.

Y'see, while we've been rebuilding we've noticed a very particular issue. One that's extremely prevalent right now as a new highly anticipated game is being released. The big thing here is seeing our content, our research, our scanned images, out translations, our everything that we put into our information, copied directly to this wikia. Word-for-word, table for table. This is something that's been going on since even the earliest days of this wikia.

Would you kindly see that this sort of behavior shouldn't be seen as acceptable? We take the time to do things by hand more often than not, fact check, credit individual users who contribute, so on and so forth. When these things are copied, word for word, it often tends to leave things such as who contributed and compiled this information out. As if it magically appeared from thin air. I'm sure we both know this isn't the case.

I'd appreciate any word on it.

    Thanks so much.

  • How do you make Navbox? I already copied one from ToT but always end up in "Header" -- "Body" and it didn't work well.

    Here

      Loading editor
    • Hey, I know I'm not Nix but your wiki should have guidelines as to creating a navbox [here|https://story-of-world.fandom.com/wiki/Template%3ANavbox] and [here|https://story-of-world.fandom.com/wiki/Template%3ANavbox_new]

The Harvest moon one likely isn't working because we have templates such as Template:SL and Template:Navbox subgroup used on this wiki that were created for... here. Thus they don't exist elsewhere!

        Loading editor
    • What are the guidelines?

        Loading editor
    • Clara,

You have to create specific guidelines and scripts for navboxes to work. For example, I couldn't just use the Tabs template on any wiki and have it work. I could try and copy/paste the code... but it won't always work because each wiki has to be designed for it. Each wiki has its own coding and navboxes that may sometimes require other navboxes or templates to work. There are basic templates that are universal from what I remember, and so you may want to start there.

In the example you showed me with the ToT template you used, for example, it could just be that it can't display the Navbox subgroup, because that in itself is its own template. It's a template within a template. The basic Navbox, however, has no issues.

You can look at the community wikia or reach out to a staff member if you need some help. I designed very basic templates years ago, but Mai has since brushed them up herself and is usually the one of the two of us who does navboxes and more sophisitcated coding. We also had a staff member come in from wikia and reach out and help us by formatting the templates to make them more modern to wikia's new standards.

  • Can you rename Toucan Island (AP) to simply Toucan Island and remove the redirect? It doesn't make sense to have it as an AP page when it is just about the location and role in multiple games.

  • Hi, this is rabiunrosa on tumblr. I am part of the Ranchstory community, it's nice to meet you. Sorry to bother, but I found my scans, and scans belonging to DarthPaperBoy (from Ranchstory.co.uk) on this wiki. I don't want my scans up here, period.  [https://harvestmoon.fandom.com/wiki/File:Goddess_artbook.jpg https://harvestmoon.fandom.com/wiki/File:Goddess_artbook.jpg https://rabiunrosa.tumblr.com/post/184022604485/from-the-15th-anniversary-bokujou-monogatari]

My blog explicitly states that I do not want these re-uploaded/reposted or altered. Please remove them.  As for DarthPaperBoy's images (which are also from the 15th anniversary book), he and I will find them and source them since we are mostly concerned about proper credit. Please don't revert these changes.
