First Meeting[]

FIRST MEETING (man)

Oh! Hello, hello! You must be [name]. When I heard a young farmer was moving in up the way, I envisioned a big, burly lad. You're younger than I expected. Why, I'd say you're no older than my grandson. Oh! Yes, yes. I ought to introduce myself. My name is Umekichi. I'm a farmer, too. If you ever have any questions about farming, come ask me. I've been doing this for some time now, you know.

FIRST MEETING (woman)

Oh! Hello, hello! You must be [name]. When I heard a young farmer was moving in up the way, I envisioned a big, burly young lad. I hardly expected a lovely young lady. Oh! Yes, yes. I ought to introduce myself. My name is Umekichi. I'm a farmer, too. I know it must be tough starting a farm from nothing. So if you ever have any questions, come ask me. I've been doing this for quite some time now, you know.

Long Interval[]

LONG INTERVAL

Why, hello there, stranger! How have you been?
I haven't seen you in so long, I was getting worried. I'm glad to see you well.

PLAYER_DOWN

I hear you collapsed the other day. Working hard is a good thing,
but working too hard just won't do. Your family will worry.

Town Upgrade[]

BRIDGE

Now that the bridge is fixed, I feel much better about going out to my fields.
I'm grateful to the whole town for their work.

SPA

I'm so grateful to you that we have our spa back.
There's nothing like a good soak in the hot tub after a long day of work.

PARK

The park that the whole town came together to clean up is a very lovely
and peaceful place. Omiyo and I will sit there together some days.
It feels like we've gone back in time to the days of our youth.

SHRINE

The shrine looks so lovely and pristine now.
I'm sure our town guardian must be quite happy.

Collaboration[]

TEAHOUSE

That dorayaki pastry you helped make is quite delicious!
I particularly enjoy the natural sweetness of the honey.

SPA

I love that the spa offers different types of baths on different days!
Now I look forward even more to soaking my old bones after a long day's work.

ACCESSORY

Ah, [name]! Thanks to your assistance,
Yuzuki's hairpieces have become quite the popular item.
First the bridge, now this... You've done so much to help our family.
I don't have the words to express how grateful we are.

Weather[]

SUNNY_SPRING

What a nice day out. It's just the kind of day
for Omiyo and I to sit on our porch and enjoy a nice cup of tea.

RAIN_SPRING

If this keeps up, I won't need to trundle on out to my fields to water them.
I won't miss that bit of work today.

SNOW_SPRING

I was just thinking it was cold out.
Now look at all this snow.
Brrr! The chill gets into my bones something fierce, let me tell you!

SUNNY_SUMMER

Goodness me! It's hot out today!
I'll have to make sure my fields don't dry out.

RAIN_SUMMER

The town is usually so bustling,
but the rain dampens all that down into a subdued murmur.
It's a little lonely, really.

SNOW_SUMMER

I was just thinking it was cold out.
Now look at all this snow.
Brrr! The chill gets into my bones something fierce, let me tell you!

SUNNY_AUTUMN

The maple trees in town turn lovely colors,
but they still can't compare to the scenery
I saw once on a trip up into the deep mountains.

RAIN_AUTUMN

Omiyo gets sick so easily when the weather is this chilly and wet.
I can't help but worry when it rains like this.

SNOW_AUTUMN

I was just thinking it was nippy out.
Now look at all this snow.
Brrr! The chill gets into my bones something fierce, let me tell you.

SUNNY_WINTER

In my younger days, I'd go out for a polar bear swim or two at this time of year.
I'm much too old for that anymore, though.

RAIN_WINTER

Omiyo gets sick so easily when the weather is this chilly and wet.
I can't help but worry when it rains like this.

SNOW_WINTER

I was just thinking it was cold out.
Now look at all this snow.
Brrr! The chill gets into my bones something fierce, let me tell you!

TYPHOON

Goodness me! Look at you, wandering around outside in this terrible weather.
Seeing you hurt isn't something me or Omiyo ever want.
You stay here until the wind calms down, and then you go straight home. Understood?

HEAVYSNOW

I'm glad you've come to visit an old couple like us,
but you getting hurt in this dangerous weather is the last thing Omiyo and I want.

We'll still be here to talk tomorrow.
And the next day, too.
You stay here until the wind calms down, and then you go straight home. Understood?

Time[]

MORNING_TALK_00

Good morning, [name].
It's good to see you youngsters so energetic at this hour.

MORNING_TALK_01

Good morning, [name].
Now, then, it's time for the two of us to head off to work.

AFTERNOON_TALK_00

Good day, [name].
Once you've finished with your chores, why don't you stop by for a cup of tea?
I'm sure Omiyo would love a chance to chat with you.

AFTERNOON_TALK_01

My, my! You certainly look busy today, [name].
Running is good exercise, but be careful you don't trip and fall.

EVENING_TALK_00

My, my. You've got dirt all over the hem of your outfit.
Proof positive that you've put in a good hard day's work, I say.

EVENING_TALK_01

Good evening, [name].
Whew! It looks like yet another day of work is coming to a close.

Feeling[]

FEELING_GOOD_TALK_00

Last night, I slept like a log,
and now I've got more energy than I know what to do with.
It feels like I've gotten 50 years younger!

FEELING_GOOD_TALK_01

I've been in high spirits all day today.
With as much energy as I have,
I feel like I can do anything you youngsters can!

FEELING_TIRED_TALK_00

Oof! I haven't been feeling well
all day. I need rest. [name]. I'm sorry, but could you come back tomorrow?

FEELING_TIRED_TALK_01

Oof! My arthritis has been acting up something fierce all day.
[name], could I ask you to massage my shoulders?

CHANGE_FEELING_GOOD

[name], it seems while I was talking with you,
all my exhaustion just flew away on the wind.
It looks like our chats are good medicine for me.

CHANGE_FEELING_BAD

Oof! It feels like all my age has just caught up with me all of a sudden.

Today[]

TODAY_FESTIVAL_PLENTY

Today's the Festival of Plenty.
Will you be joining us this year, [name]?

A festival is best enjoyed surrounded by friends.
I'm sure everyone will be happy to see you, myself included!

TODAY_GAME

What will you be doing for the Trilympics this year, [name]?
This festival is more fun when you youngsters participate!
None of the events are terribly difficult,
and they're all entertaining.
If you're interested, I highly suggest you give them a try.

TODAY_DRINK

I participated in the Beverage Bash once,
in my younger days. My entire team was livid with me.
To this day, I tell them I wasn't joking...

TODAY_FRIENDSHIP

Every year since I first asked her on a date,
I spend the Star Festival together with Omiyo.
There's never been another woman for me.

TODAY_NEW_YEAR

New Year's is here again,
and with it comes hot, fluffy, chewy, freshly made mochi.
It's one of my favorite treats of the whole year.

TODAY_FESTIVAL_LONGEVITY

Here, this is for you.
It's made with the wish that you have many healthy years ahead of you.
Though I must admit cooking isn't my forte.
Omiyo made it for me. And if there is anything she knows,
it's how to cook! I'm sure this porridge will be some of the best you've ever tasted.

Campaign[]

CAMPAIGN_FESTIVAL_PLENTY_00

Ah, collecting donations for the Festival of Longevity? Wait just a moment. Hmm... I'm sure I put it somewhere...

CAMPAIGN_FESTIVAL_PLENTY_01

Oho ho ho! Well if you're going to ask that nicely, [name], I don't see how I can resist! This is more than I'd been planning, but here. I'll give this much. Oh. And keep it a secret from Omiyo, would you?

CAMPAIGN_FESTIVAL_PLENTY_02

Ah! There it is! I'd put it in the other pocket. Here. Pass this along to Ginjiro, would you?

Hmm? I'm sorry, did you say something? What's wrong?

Map[]

MAP_TSUYUKUSA_00

To come here from our house, I always have to pass in front of the teahouse. And every time, the delicious smells are just too much for me to ignore. Both my wife and I are regulars there...and have been for years.

MAP_TSUYUKUSA_01

When I take a walk around town, sometimes I'll stop by to see how my grandson's crafts are selling. Oh, but don't let him know.

MAP_TSUYUKUSA_02

Isn't this a nice and peaceful place? I think it's the perfect place to live.

MAP_TSUYUKUSA_03

There are lots of wild vegetables in the bamboo thickets down yonder. I'll often bring some home for Omiyo to make dinner with.

MAP_WIND_BELL

Old, old stories tell of how the tinkling of a wind chime keeps evil spirits and bad luck at bay. I don't know how true that is, but when I hear their pure, clear notes, I can guess how they'd make anything evil turn and run away.

MAP_COLD_VEGETABLE

Leaving vegetables out here to chill in the spring means that, every once in a while, a critter will walk away with a free lunch.

The fact that they come here to take these and not the ones from the field tells me even the animals know how tasty a chilled veggie is!

MAP_FIREFLY

Aren't the fireflies lovely? Man-made light grows brighter and more convenient with the passage of time. But the more it changes, the colder it seems to feel. On the other hand, a firefly's light hasn't changed a bit. Because it hasn't, people across all ages can continue to experience how warm, beautiful, and natural it is.

MAP_MORNING_GLORY

The morning glories are in full bloom again today. Every time I see them looking so lovely, it feels like a real treat.

MAP_SILVER_GRASS

Some time ago, I overheard a visitor to the town look at the pampas grass and say they didn't expect rice plants to look like that. Taking a closer look, I can see how someone not from the area would think that. It's an interesting point of view.

MAP_DRAGONFLY

Ah, look. A dragonfly. I used to run all over, trying to catch those nimble little things when I was still but a lad.

MAP_STRAW

[name], what do you do with the straw left over from harvests? I use it as fodder for my livestock or the materials to make straw hats and sandals. There are many, many uses for it.

MAP_DRIED_PERSIMMON

To make good, sweet dried persimmons, you first must start with a fresh, ripe sour persimmon. Once upon a time, I tried drying other types of persimmons, but none turned out as sweet. I wonder why that is...

MAP_MY_HOUSE_00

Ah! Welcome, welcome. Come, now! Don't stand like a stick in the mud. Have a seat right over here.

Friendship[]

Man[]

MAN_FRENDSHIP_CONVERSATION_00

That we've met and both share a profession may not be simple coincidence. From one farmer to another, I hope that we will grow to be good friends, always ready to help each other out in a pinch.

MAN_FRENDSHIP_CONVERSATION_01

How have you been doing, [name]? I haven't been farming for years upon years for nothing, you know. If you ever need any help, whether it's with your crops, your animals, or even the little details of daily life, you can come see me.

MAN_FRENDSHIP_CONVERSATION_02

At her age, Omiyo has something of a delicate constitution. She'll often spend days resting at home. Chatting with someone as cheerful and amusing as you may be just the medicine she needs.

But remember, her favorite conversation partner has been, and always will be, me! I won't let any young whippersnapper take that spot!

MAN_FRENDSHIP_CONVERSATION_03

Goodness me! The two of us certainly chat up a storm, [name]. You're quite the conversationalist. You always have some new and interesting topics to bring up. There's never a dull moment with you!

MAN_FRENDSHIP_CONVERSATION_04

Sometimes when we chat, I feel as if I'm talking with a friend who's been with me for years upon years. Even though you are young enough to be my grandchild! Funny, isn't it? Still, I guess age has little bearing when two people are truly friends. [name], to me, you're just such a precious, close friend.

Woman[]

WOMAN_FRENDSHIP_CONVERSATION_00

That we've met and both share a profession may not be simple coincidence. From one farmer to another, I hope that we will grow to be good friends, always ready to help each other out in a pinch.

WOMAN_FRENDSHIP_CONVERSATION_01

How have you been doing, [name]? I haven't been farming for years upon years for nothing, you know. If you ever need any help, whether it's with your crops, your animals, or even the little details of daily life, you can come see me.

WOMAN_FRENDSHIP_CONVERSATION_02

At her age, Omiyo has something of a delicate constitution. She'll often spend days resting at home. Chatting with someone as cheerful and amusing as you may be just the medicine she needs.

So if you wouldn't mind, feel free to go and speak to her whenever you like. I'm sure she'd be very happy for the company.

WOMAN_FRENDSHIP_CONVERSATION_03

Goodness me! The two of us certainly chat up a storm, [name]. You're quite the conversationalist. I've never thought of myself as the talkative sort, but when we get together, I feel like I become a chatterbox. Omiyo has always been a good listener, but I've come to think you have a good ear as well. There's never a dull moment when I'm with you.

WOMAN_FRENDSHIP_CONVERSATION_04

Sometimes when we chat, I feel as if I'm talking with a friend who's known me for years upon years. Even though you are young enough to be my grandchild! Funny, isn't it? Still, I guess age and gender have little bearing when two people are truly friends. [name], to me, you're just such a precious, close friend.

BLESSING_ENGAGEMENT_FAMILY

Ah, that the two of you will soon be married still seems like just a dream. I haven't been this joyous in years upon years. If there's anything you need for the ceremony, don't hesitate to let Omiyo and I know. We'll be only too glad to help.

BLESSING_ENGAGEMENT_OTHER

Congratulations, [name]. I hear you've gotten engaged. I wish the best to you both.

[name], congratulations on your marriage. How is newlywed life together with [husband name]? Oh! I guess I don't need to know the details. I'm glad to know the two of you are happy together.

BLESSING_MARRIAGE_FAMILY

[name], how is newlywed life treating you? Is Yuzuki being a good husband?

Oh, yes. I ought to first offer you my congratulations again. My curiosity about you two got the better of me. I guess I needn't know all the details, though. I'm glad to know the two of you are happy together.

BLESSING_MARRIAGE_OTHER

[name], congratulations on your marriage. How is newlywed life treating you? Oh! I guess I don't need to know the details.

BLESSING_MARRIAGE_PRESENT

Oh, yes! That's right. I had something I was going to give to you. Here. A wedding present from me. I hope you like it.

MAN_BLESSING_CHILD_BIRTH

Congratulations on the birth of your child, [name]. How is [wife name] doing? I hear it was an easy birth. Child birth is a very difficult experience, one we men will never understand. Be sure you show your wife your appreciation.

WOMAN_BLESSING_CHILD_BIRTH

Congratulations on the birth of your child, [name]. How are you doing? I hear it was an easy birth. The birthing of a child is a very difficult experience, one a man will never understand. Lean on your husband all you need, all right? I'm sure [husband name] will pamper you to your heart's content. If he doesn't, you let me know, and I'll make sure to give him what for!

BLESSING_CHILD_BIRTH_FAMILY

Congratulations on the birth of your child. I'm so glad that both you and the baby are all right. Goodness, I guess this makes me a great- grandfather now. What a thought! Thank you for giving us yet another family member.

Happy birthday, [name]. Here. I have a birthday present for you. I hope you like it.

Talk[]

Talk 0

I enjoy thinking up stories. When I have free time, I'll even make the attempt at writing a few of them down.

Talk 1

It's far more difficult than one would expect to get a story or a picture out of one's head and on to the paper. I've enjoyed writing for many a long year now, but I'm still far from being skilled enough to show anyone what I've written. Most things can be overcome with experience and effort, but expressing oneself well...now that, I think, takes some talent.

Talk 2

For all the long years we had children in the house, I'd call Omiyo "Mother." But once our children grew up and left the nest, I went back to calling her by name. A remnant of those years of habit still clings, though. If I get lost in thoughts from back in the day, I'll accidentally call her "Mother" again.

Talk 3

I had quite the case of wanderlust when I was still a young man. I'd often get up and take off by myself, traveling to faraway places.

Talk 4

I'm fond of foods with milder flavors. When you get to be my age, strong-tasting foods are just too much.

Talk 5

My poor Omiyo. Her health gets frailer with each passing year. I can't help but worry.

Talk 6

My favorite color? Hmm... Green, I think. I usually pick kimonos with green, at least.

Talk 7

When I was a much younger man, I used to run a much larger farm. But as I got older, I couldn't take on as much work. I pared things down until I had only the bare-minimum fields we needed.

Talk 8

Omiyo lived in a different town until the two of us married. Then she moved in here with me. We first met when she visited this town on a lark. The rest, as they say, is history.

Talk 9

Ginjiro and I have been friends ever since he moved into town when he first got married. Thinking on it, we have been friends for a good long time, now. Time flies by so fast.

Talk 10

Ra Man's used to be a much smaller shop in the olden days. Moriya is quite the good businessman, though. I remember being surprised at how quickly it grew once he took charge.

Talk 11

[name], have you ever seen the ink paintings that Ittetsu does? He's surprisingly good. Ask him to show them to you sometime.

Talk 12

Omiyo and Shizu are very close friends. You'll always find them going off to town to have tea or to see a play together.

Talk 13

Tatsumi has a very good head on his shoulders for a boy his age. I guess that's no surprise, considering his parents, Ittetsu and Shizu. They're both the responsible, conscientious sort.

Talk 14

Yaichi adores his brother Tatsumi so much. Watching him tag along behind Tatsumi never fails to make me smile. It's nice to see brothers who care so much for each other.

Talk 15

I was out walking the other day when I saw a coin dropped on the road. A few steps further, there was another. Curious, I followed the trail.

And I found little Sumomo happily skipping along, dribbling coins out of her purse. Apparently, she'd been sent on an errand, and she hadn't noticed there was a hole in her purse. I went up to her and returned all the coins, telling her about the hole. The poor girl went white as a ghost, bowing and hurrying off. Now I think I understand what Moriya meant when he said it's unwise to leave her unsupervised for very long.

Talk 16

Dr. Ford will come and visit us often, delivering Omiyo's medicine. Going all the way to his clinic is quite the trek for us two, you see. We're grateful he's so kind as to bring the medicine directly to us.

Talk 17

It's the people that make a festival fun. If there are fewer people about, the number of festivals will often dwindle as a result. But recently, the town has grown bigger than even when I was a young boy, and the number of festivals is growing as well.

Talk 18

They say that the older you get, the earlier your mornings get. But being a farmer as long as I have, mornings have always been early for me. That hasn't changed much across the years. The older you grow, the frailer and more forgetful you become. I'm learning that firsthand.

Talk 19

The town's guardian deity lives in the shrine at the edge of town...or so the legend goes. Hmm, come to think of it...When Yuzuki was still a boy, he came home one day saying he and the guardian had played together. If that's true, I guess our town's deity is fond of children.

Talk 20

Hinata is a good young man. He's always giving his very best, working toward his dreams. I'm glad Yuzuki has someone like him for a best friend.

Talk 21

Poor Yuzuki was a sickly boy. His parents decided the air in the city wasn't good for his health. So they sent him here to move in with us. As you can see, he's grown quite healthy since! I can hardly believe that he used to be that pale, skinny ghost of a young lad.

Talk 22

The last time I visited the teahouse, Komari gave me an extra package of sweets to take home to Omiyo. She's always been a thoughtful girl. When Yuzuki first came here, she would often come up to visit and see how he was doing.

Talk 23

I thought I'd get a present for Omiyo just because. So I went into town and bought one of Yuzuki's hairpieces for her. She was ecstatic. She said a hairpiece made by her favorite grandson and gifted to her by her husband was the best present she could get.

Seeing her so happy about it is the best present I could get in return!

Talk 24

Yuzuki has grown up into such a good young man. Omiyo and I are so proud of him.

Talk 25

My daughter was the bright and energetic sort. Yuzuki did not take after her much in that way. But he does have her face. When he was little, he looked almost exactly like her.

Talk 26

Kasumi is an excellent teacher. Teaching things to others, especially to children, is a difficult task. For her to be so respected, she must be quite skilled indeed.

Talk 27

I will often give Omiyo a flower as a gift. It's been a habit of mine for many, many years now. At first, I decided to get one for her on a whim, because I saw one that I thought would look pretty on her. I got the next flower because I couldn't forget the smile on her face when she accepted the first one. I wanted to see that smile again. Later, after I'd given her several flowers, I heard from one of her friends that she made pressed flowers of them all to keep.

And that was the final straw. I thought that was so precious that I went right up and proposed to her that very day! The most impulsive thing I've done in my life!

Talk 28

I've never been particularly deft with my hands. Neither of Yuzuki's parents are, either. I'm sure he must get that talent from Omiyo.

Talk 29

At first, Yuzuki came to stay with us only until his health improved. We all thought he would move back with his parents when he was well. We never expected that he would tell us that he had no intention of leaving us. Both Omiyo and I broke down, crying with joy. We'd both told ourselves we wouldn't cry when he left, so we weren't prepared to hear that he would stay. Is it any surprise that we both forgot our age and cried like little children?

Talk 30

I love to see Omiyo smile. As long as she's smiling, I'm the happiest I can be.
