Town Data[]
History[]
Westown was once a prosperous mining town, but mining on the summit of the mountain has been forbidden for ages ever since a large bird made its home there.[2] Years ago, an unscrupulous captain of industry came and tried to develop the area but failed. Local stories say his workers found their tools flying into the air when they tried to use them. Years ago, the foundation for a bell tower was built but the construction was halted when the money ran out. Megan became town elder when she was still in her thirties even though she wasn't the eldest then. The town symbol is a buffalo statue, a possible tribute to the farms that thrive on the livestock in the area.
Etymology[]
ウェスタウン (Uesutaun) literal translation is "west town" which in turn could be derived from the ウエスタン (Uesutan) meaning Western. It can also refer to Western film genre or Western (country) music.[3]
Culture[]
Westown is a cheerful and friendly town with a Western atmosphere. Although the residents have their own regional dialect which might seem to be too informal to other cultures, it is generally friendly and hospitable in nature. In Westown, it's customary to hug as a greeting.
Deity[]
Legend has it that the town's guardian spirit, a goddess, lives in the river. Residents of the town pray or make offerings at the spring. Marco, as the oldest living resident, has never caught a glimpse of her. According to Megan, when she was 10 years old, folks started telling tales of a goddess who might live in the spring. So it is possible that it was around that time that the goddess first came to Westown.
Dessie is a kindhearted goddess whose job is to watch over and protect the little town of Westown. She is very new in her duties as guardian and as a deity she has all kinds of nifty magic powers. Unfortunately, her spells are known to backfire.
Dialect[]
- Howdy: Hello
- Folks: People
- Pardon: Excuse me/Sorry
Festivals[]
- Goddess Festival: Every year on Spring 27, the festival is held to show gratitude to the goddess, who has protected the town since its founding. In honor of that goddess, the residents make a giant pizza and dance all day.
- Flower Fair: Every year on Summer 31, exchange gifts of flowers with residents to increase friendship.
- Starlight Gala: Every year on Winter 25, spend a romantic evening with a marriage candidate.
Geography[]
The whole town is situated on a mountainside and is a good place for raising livestock. The red soil, hills, and tall cliffs are some of the unique characteristics of the area. The land is perfect for farms that use lots of water and grow green veggies. Fodder can be harvested as well.[4] The roads were once narrow dirt paths through the boulders but have since been widen over the years. There are 4 points in town where ore and gems can be mined from natural crevices.
