After marriage in Harvest Moon: Animal Parade, you can add on to your family by having children. Animal Parade allows players to have two children total, and you can choose the gender for both of your children. Each child will have appearance and personality based on your spouse.
To have children, you must have a Level 3 house and befriend your spouse to the appropriate heart level. Regular candidates must have 14 hearts before asking for children, the Witch and Wizard require 15 hearts, while the Harvest King and Harvest Goddess need 16 hearts. For the second child, you would need 16 Hearts with your spouse for them to pop the question.
Appearance[]
Since two children per file are possible in Animal Parade, there are four predetermined "styles" of children. Two for each gender determined on who is born first and second. Although they have the same facial features, the firstborn child have a slightly more mature look.
Your children will always inherit your spouse' hair and eye color, but their hair color will be a shade darker than your spouse'. Children can be dressed in various clothing.
Personality[]
Your child will have different personalities in game: Quiet, Fiery, Studious, and Romantic. Personalities change depending on who you've married. Your child's personality will only change dialogue and chores they specialize in. You will get two choices at each stage of their growth, with each choice reflecting their personality one way or another. Like with marriage candidates, you must ask your children for help between 6am and 7am if you want them to do chores on that day.
Type | Bachelors | Bachelorettes | Skills |
---|---|---|---|
Quiet | Chase, Gill, Harvest King, Jin, Julius, Luke, Toby, and Wizard | Anissa, Candace, Harvest Goddess, Maya, Phoebe, Renee, Selena, and Witch | Egg/silk collecting, fishing, and mining |
Fiery | Calvin, Harvest King, Jin, Luke, and Owen | Kathy, Luna, Maya, Phoebe, Witch, and Selena | Brushing, mining, and weeding |
Studious | Calvin, Chase, Gill, Harvest King, Jin, Julius, Owen, Toby, and Wizard | Anissa, Candace, Harvest Goddess, Kathy, Luna, Phoebe, and Renee | Harvesting, mining, and watering |
Romantic | Calvin, Chase, Gill, Julius, Luke, Owen, Toby, and Wizard | Anissa, Candace, Maya, Kathy, Harvest Goddess, Luna, Maya, Renee, Selena, and Witch | Foraging, milking, and watering |
Stages[]
Pregnancy[]
Randomly in the morning, your spouse will ask if you want to have a child. Agreeing will result in them asking what gender you would prefer with the due date being told through calendar. You can pick either of two gender or let your spouse choose. If you disagree, you will lose hearts gradually. Your spouse will keep asking until their hearts drop below the required level for the question to be asked.
Birth[]
On the due date, the female side of partnership will feel unwell. The couple will be automatically transported to Choral Clinic, where Irene will ask that the male wait outside until their baby is born. After being told their gender, you will be prompted to name them. Irene also sends a baby crib and childcare book to your house.
This rule does not apply to the Harvest King or Harvest Goddess. If you chose to marry one of them, they will deliver the child themselves at your home. Whichever celestial being you married will leave you with a crib after this event.
Newborn[]
At this stage, child interactions are limited. You will be asked what you think your child's personality will be. Selecting the first option will lead to a Fiery or Studious. If you answer with the second option, it will result in a Quiet or Romantic personality. Regardless of gender, the baby will wrapped in a blue towel.
You can interact with your baby if you have a rattle, which can be used if they are crying or simply for entertainment purpose. You will also be able to pick your child up and take them out of the crib for a while. Showing them to other characters will result in them usually giving a compliment on how cute the child is. The baby cannot be put down when they are in your arms and can only go back into their crib.
Crawling[]
Two weeks after your child is born, they will learn how to crawl while growing in size with hair and eye color becoming more apparent. Baby boys will wear a green jumper with a cat hat, while baby girls wear an orange jumper with a rabbit hat.
Upon being given a choice to make with this stage, the first option will lead to a Fiery or Scholarly personality type. The second option will lead to a Quiet or Romantic personality. You can sooth your baby at this stage if they are crying. As in Newborn Stage, you will still be able to pick up your child if you leave the house.
Walking Stage[]
Two weeks after your child learns to crawl, they will start to walk. Changes start to become slow at this point in your child's growth. Apart from learning to walk and slowly growing up, nothing significant changes. The same interactions apply as the Crawling stage.
You will get another personality choice: the first option will result in a Scholarly or Romantic personality type, while the second choice will result in a Fiery or Quiet personality type. This is the most recognizable personality type choice, as it deviates from the regular personality changes.
Talking Stage[]
The talking stage happens two weeks before they are fully-grown. In the Japanese version, when your spouse asks what you'd like to be called, you will prompted to pick an option. You can actually choose what your child will call you the casual "Mom"/"Dad" or formal "Mother"/"Father". This option is absent from Western versions; your spouse will only ask what you'd prefer to be called, but you don't get to choose. Once a choice has been made, it cannot be changed later.
Fully-grown[]
The child will be fully-grown two weeks after they learned to talk. From this point on, you can interact with them by gift-giving and talking, and there will be events with children.
Upon waking up in the morning on the day they grow up, a cut-scene of your family getting ready going to Simon's Photography Studio to take photos will play. Before that, there is a cut-scene of them visiting Perry. The picture is automatically put into your album and can be displayed at your house. The same scene when your second child is born will happen, but with both children.
Afterwards, Hamilton will give you a Child's Bed so your children will now sleep in the second bedroom of house. You will also be able to dress your children through the dresser. Each gender comes with two default outfits to choose from and additional clothing can be purchased from Sonata Tailoring. Different genders will wear different clothing and cannot be shared.
Second Child[]
Now that your first child has become fully-grown, your spouse may ask you to have a second child. The circumstances and requirements for the second child are the same for the first. Both children will stay in the same bedroom.
Unlike other Harvest Moon video games, the player can have two children of same gender if they want. Instead of the pregnancy, the due date is set to two weeks after the child request. The dialogue and circumstances for a second child will change slightly.
Events[]
Child's Birthday[]
On the day each child's birthday falls on the calendar, walking into your house after 6pm will trigger the birthday event.
Your spouse will be waiting with your child and ask what day it is. You will be given three options of your spouse' birthday, child's birthday, or wedding anniversary. Seletcing the negative answer will lose hearts with child and spouse.
After answering correctly, your spouse and child will both be relieved that you remembered, with the player being prompted to give the latter a gift. Not doing so will lose hearts with your spouse and child. This event finishes with a birthday dinner.
Missing Child[]
Part 1[]
This event only occurs once with your first child only when they have 4 hearts. It takes place the entire day and will last until 8pm.
In the morning, your spouse is afraid that their child is missing. The latter was gone when they woke up in the morning and did not tell anybody where they were going. At night, your child still has not returned, making their parents worried. As your spouse is about to go out looking for the child, they suddenly return much to their parents' worry.
Part 2[]
The second part will trigger after viewing the first part with your child having 8 hearts. The same situation will happen, except your spouse will scold them and asks why they went so late. A baby fox got separated from its mother, so your child was only trying to help reunite them. They neither realize how late it was nor mean to make you worried. The player and their spouse will be relieved that their child returned home safe.
Child Nurse[]
This event will last the entire day and trigger when your first child has 6 hearts.
Rather than the usual gameplay that normally starts, the player will remain in the bed feeling unwell. Their child is worried and asks how they are feeling. The player's spouse will reassure their first child, saying that they will take care of their sick parent and not to worry. However, their child will insist that they can care for their sick parent. The player will finally wake up at 8pm, where they begin the gameplay that they missed during daytime. The child would gain +1 Heart from this event.
Child Arguments[]
This event triggers when your second child has 4 Hearts, as long as there is at least one rival child that is fully-grown. In the morning, you will awake to find your child crying inside the house. When you ask what's wrong, the child will explain that they got into an argument with a rival child. Your spouse will tell them that arguing is never a good idea, so the two children need to make up.
The second part, which is considered the ending, triggers when the second child has 6 hearts. You will wake up to find the rival child wanting to make up with your child. The former will ask if they want to go play, to which your child agrees and lets the Player know they are going off to Harmonica Town for some fun.
Note: Sometimes a separate rival child may come in the second part instead. In one case, Angie came instead of Roy...but it's probably for the better since Angie is their cousin in my scenario...?
Wedding Anniversary[]
On every Wedding Ceremony, you can trigger a cutscene after 18:00 by entering your home to be greeted by Luna and your kid(s). You would be asked to guess what day is it by your family member(s). A correct answer would raise 1 Heart with your spouse, while the wrong answer would decrease 1 Heart with your spouse and end the event immediately.
The family would gather around for a Heartful Dinner, note that the event would differ if you have kid(s). The event would end with your spouse kissing you good night.
Player's Birthday[]
Return home at 6pm to get a Birthday Party thrown by your kid and spouse to celebrate your birthday. The child would give you a birthday present, even though it won't be anything outstanding, the thought itself is ultimately what matters. Your kid would excitingly share that they helped decorate the cake while helping with the preparations.
After the cutscene is over, you'll find yourself at your home at midnight.
Mastery of Chore[]
Once your child has completed a particular chore 28 times, you would have a cutscene with your child where they brag that they are better at that particular task now.
You will also get a 2nd cutscene once they did the chore 56 times.
Circus Fun time[]
If you want to take your family to the circus, you need to have them follow behind as you lead them there. Your kids can slide down the giraffe's neck and browse the other animals.
A full circus show will be available when you have rescued Eunice, Trunks, and Humphrey. To start the circus show, talk to Theodore. The show that plays is the same every season.[1]
Child Birthday[]
Besides yours and your spouse's, your children also have birthday celebrations. Go into your house after 6:00 pm to start the celebration. Unlike the adult birthdays, the kids want presents on their birthday. At the start of the birthday dinner you will be prompted to pick an item out of your rucksack for your birthday boy or girl.
If you do not give your child a present, shame on you! You will lose affection with your child (and spouse, for being such a party-pooper).[2]
Spouse's Birthday[]
Your child will attend your spouse's birthday as it is a special celebration. You can either wait until after 6pm to go inside your house, or give them a gift to start the birthday event.
If you start the spouse's birthday event in the morning, the entire day is set aside for the birthday meal and it will end at midnight.[3]
Birth of a Farm Animal[]
Your child/children would have a small cameo whenever you welcome the birth of a new Poultry/Livestock at your farmstead.
Death of a Farm Animal[]
Your child/ children would sob and mourn with you when a Poultry/Livestock dies at your farmstead.
Shoutout to Animal Parade devs for letting our livestocks having a proper grave :(
Art Lessons[]
This event seems to require both child & rival kids to be around to activate. It may also have the requirement of Sunday + good weather to make sure it happen.
Gill would be the homeroom teacher in this art lesson. Your first child would ask whether they could draw 2 things for their assignment, which would then be revealed to be drawing both you and your spouse as they love both of you.
Seeing this, the other kids ask to draw 2 things for their assignments too. Gill agrees to bring more papers for the kids, to which your first child shows visible sign of being excited for getting the approval for doing what they wanted.
Reading Lessons[]
Similar to the previous event, you would need Sunday + good weather + Non-active chores assigned to kids(?) + at least 1 Rival Kid for it to show up from 8am onwards when entering the School in Harmonica town.
Gill would reprise his role as a homecoming teacher, and asks for a child to read the words on the textbook. Your younger child would be chosen by Gill, but messes up the spelling of a word. Your older child would remind their younger sibling about their little mistake, and they quickly repeats the correct spelling of the word.
Gill praises the duos' teamwork in this lesson, as both your child happily expresses their thoughts with the older sibling cheering for their younger sibling who giggles happily.
Rival Child Events[]
Dungeon Crawling[]
Pass by Ramsey's blacksmith shop when Lucy, Heath, or Roy are at 2 hearts or higher.
Your child will be asked how strong he/she is. Of course he/she is! Then your child will be asked if he/she is ready to leave for the dungeon. The two kids get excited and take off towards the mine.
You may see this event more than one time, as you raise your friendship with Lucy, Heath, and Roy. The event plays the same each time.[4]
Evaporation Explanation[]
Walk into Choral Clinic when Van is at 3 or more hearts.
Inside the clinic, Van is explaining how evaporation occurs and creates rain. Your child listens and understands that the water from the pond is not completely lost since it falls back down. Van doesn't know what he/she means when your child talks about the pond on your farm, so your child asks if he knows that ponds are the starting point for a river. Van didn't know that you had a pond that started a river, and wants to check it out.[4]
Learning Is Easy[]
Go into the school between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm when Angie or Vivian have 2 or more hearts. Walk down the left-side of the classroom if you're having problems triggering this event.
Inside the school, Angie and your child are talking about the planet and how it looks blue from space. Their planet is 70% water after all! It seems hard to learn such things, but Angie says it's not hard at all. Your child thinks Angie is really smart.[4]
Fishing Friends[]
Walk along the path that leads behind the pond on your farm in the Farmland district when Matt had 3 or more hearts.
Your child and Matt are standing on the small dock at the pond. Matt is telling him/her that there are some fish that can only be caught during hurricanes, although that requires one to actually go outside during the storm.
Well, your child mentions how you (the parent) always go outside during bad weather. Suddenly there's a tug on Matt's fishing line and he pulls up a beautiful trout. Both kids are happy, and Matt suggests that they go give the fish to his mom.[4]
Treasure Hunting[]
From Flute Fields, walk across the bridge towards the Farmland when Dakota has 3 or more hearts.
Your oldest child and Dakota are investigating the barrels near the Flue Field waterwheel. Both kids found something, and your child shows off the mushroom that he/she found. Dakota is really impressed with the fungus' size, and compliments your child on finding it.[4]
Festivals[]
Your children can attend festivals in Animal Parade, some of them even granting full cutscenes that changes depending on how many kids are present. Below are the various screenshots of the Final version of your children's Festival Events:
Flower Viewing Festival[]
Firefly Festival[]
Summer Festival[]
Moon Viewing Festival[]
Starry Night Festival[]
New Years Eve Festival[]
New Game + Events[]
Finding the Pure-Hearted Individual[]
As shown over in the New Game + page, you can bring along your kid(s) to meet the Harvest King once you are ready to initiate the New Game + sequence.
The Harvest King will tell you and your children about a small island to the east where the power of nature is weak. He wishes to send a sapling from the Harvest Goddess divine tree there, and explains the sapling must be carried there by someone pure of heart. You are given the choice to choose which of your children to perform the task.
Once The Bearer of the Seedling has been decided, the Harvest King will explain that there are still two other tasks that must be completed. The first is to get Nature's Bounty to make a new divine tree sapling, and the other is to get someone to be the Guardian of the Tree to protect the new tree.
Harvest King mentions that Nature's Bounty is supposed to shine and sparkle, to which your child would point out that they saw them around farm all the time. Finn would then suggests you talk to the Harvest Sprites to gather the ingredients to make Nature's Bounty. [5]
Spouse's Reflection[]
On the same night where your child had decided to become the Bearer of the Seedling, the player and their spouse would gather at the child's bed as your partner expresses their thought on your child's decision.
Their reaction would vary depending on their personality, though all of them ultimately agrees with the child's decision and decide to support them on their new journey.
Finn's Transformation into the Guardian of the Tree[]
You will learn from the Harvest Goddess eventually that for the next 5 days, Finn will have to remind you to bring your child to the Goddess Pond so he/she and him can water the Goddess Tree Seedling. Stand next to the sprout and press the A button to allow the two of them to water it. The tree will grow just a little bit every 2 days.
On the 5th day after your child and Finn waters the tree, the Harvest Goddess will appear before you and inform you that the seed has grown into a fine seedling, praising both of them for a job well done. She also fully acknowledges Finn as a full-fledged Harvest Sprite for completing the task, and appoints him as the Guardian of the Tree.
As a celebration, the Harvest Goddess and the other Harvest Sprites gather together to give some of their powers to Finn. After receiving his newfound powers, Finn is tasked to "imagine what he needs to do next" from the Harvest Goddess. Finn goes for his first attempt, but he summons a mini rainbow atop of him! Your child shows some confusion on what that is supposed to be, so Finn says that didn't come out right and tries again with all his might.
This time, Finn successfully materializes a rainbow bridge that trails off into the distance. The Harvest Goddess says that Finn now possess the power to create rainbows, and he will have to take the seedling to the far, distant Waffle island along with your child.
She's sure the Harvest King will recognize Finn and your child as the official guardians now. The Harvest Goddess will also give you the Goddess Tree Seedling and instructs you to take it to the Harvest King.[6]
Starting the NG+ Journey[]
At the Harvest King's throne, the Harvest King will inform you all the preparations for the Goddess Tree Seedling have been made, the sole remaining step is to send your child off to their journey.
This is the point of no return! If you are not ready to start NG+ then do not tell him you are ready. The remainder of the game is a series of cut scenes that you mostly just sit back and watch. I highly recommend putting some tissues within reach in case of tears. 😭
Once you are ready, the Harvest King informs you that your child would depart from Goddess Spring tomorrow morning. He also fully entrusts Finn as the protector of nature and people of Waffle Island. You feel sad about being separated from your child, but the Harvest King reminds you that at some point in time you have to let your child embark on their own journey. The game will immediately shift to your evening meal, where your entire family is spending their last night together before your chosen child leaves for Waffle Island.
During midnight, you'll wake up and find your child has left the house and traveled down to the Southeast beach near your ranch. They confides in you that they couldn't sleep, but it's not because of them leaving the house come morning. They might feel scared about the upcoming journey, but the true reason is they are a little worried about leaving you and your spouse behind.
Will you able to wake up on time without them around? Will your spouse lose sleep worrying about their child? Knowing this, your child would ask you if they made the right decision and what do you think about it. You can answer them with any encouragement options available to you, such as "You're all grown up now!/ I love you!/ I'm so proud of you!". Your child would feel relieved after hearing your response, and replies that they love you a lot! ❤️
In your final morning, you will all gather at the Goddess Pond to see the chosen child off to the next island. A few of the villagers and Mayor Hamilton have also come to send them off and give their words of encouragement. Your spouse would ask the child to send a letter once they're settled in the new place. Hamilton then suggests taking a group photo to commemorate this day.
Before your child leaves for their journey, you can tell them to wait for a moment, and give them a gift that will be handed over to the person waiting on the other side of the rainbow. You can only give items, and not tools or any other key items like the camera or upgraded farm tools. After giving over the item, your child and Finn will bid farewell and travel across the rainbow bridge, with everyone including your family also waving them goodbye for the final time.[7]
The credits will roll for around 2 mins 30 secs, with the final scene being Finn hovering over the planted Goddess Seedling on Waffle Island.
Starting a NG+[]
After the child walks across the rainbow, you can choose to have the last photo appear on your Wii's message board. You also can choose which save slot you want to use for the new game. You do not have to over-write the game file you just sent your child off on if you don't want to.
Once the ending credits finish, you will be taken back to the title screen. When you choose to continue your game and select the save marked with a gold star, you will be taken to the create new character screen. A new game will start from that point.
After you finish meeting with Hamilton, the child from your previous game will stop by and give you any gift that your previous character send the child off with.
At this point you can save over the previous game file. If you tried to continue your old game-cleared file, you would just start a new game again. Saving over the old game-cleared gold star save file will still keep the gold star marker on your new game save file.[7]
Trivia[]
- Animal Parade has the shortest time span of child system of all Harvest Moon video games. From the time your spouse asks you for a child, it takes only two in-game weeks.
